Balloon Race Result

Balloon Race MapFollowing our Balloon release on the 17th May we received only 5 returned balloons. As we predicted on the day the balloons travelled in a South West direction, finally landing in and around the Forest Of Dean area. The winning ticket travelled 22.09 miles with a final resting spot in Llandogo, Monmouthshire.

So well done to Trish Bluett for buying the winning ticket, and to June for returning it. Both of you will receive your prizes in the post.

Thanks for supporting this event.

Explorers Bronze Practice Expedition

The leaders had a really good time on the Explorers Bronze Practice Expedition, which involved a 10 mile walk from Upton St Leonard's to Miserden.  The weather was wonderful, and Blackadder took plenty of really interesting photos - I'm sure he'll upload some in due course.  It was a great teambuilding weekend - thanks to all for their company!

Summer Camp

The Scouts took part in a week of many and varied activites on Summer Camp this year.

We stayed at Bramhope Scout Campsite, West Yorkshire's County Campsite where the hospitality and facilities were second to none!  The staff and wardens took pity on those poor (dirty) Scouts from Gloucester with no clean running water at home, and let us use the indoor accommodation so that we could all get cleaned up and cook normally.  There website http://www.bramhope.org.uk/.  This is one highly recommended campsite!

On the Sunday the Scouts enjoyed a day in the sun on Ilkley Moor takling the less than straightforward orienteering course for the Adventure Challenge, returning to site to be rewarded with time to play in the paddling pool!  All participants completed First Aid stage 1 in the evening.

Monday was our trip to York. In the morning some Scouts went to the Viking museum (http://www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/) whilst others went to the Railway museum (http://www.nrm.org.uk/home/home.asp).  The rest of the day was spent exploring the city for their Adventure Challenge - they did a treasure hunt in the afternoon then following a much deserved pizza in Pizza Hut went on to the ghost tour in the evening...BOO! http://www.theoriginalghostwalkofyork.co.uk/

On Tuesday we went for a walk from Malham up to Malham Cove and down Goredale Scar (http://www.malhamdale.com/walking.htm) for the Adventure Challenge - we were also supposed to visit Malham Tarn... More map reading sessions are planned for Spring term.  All Scouts were awarded Hikes Away Stage 1 - with Isabel making it to Stage 2 already!  Some Scouts completed their Guide badge that evening too.

Wednesday was our trip to Skipton Castle (http://www.skiptoncastle.co.uk/).  The Scouts had a great time learning about where these old phrases like 'getting hold of the wrong end of the stick' came from (if you want to know, ask one of them!).  In the evening we went swimming.  Some Scouts completed their swimmer stage 2 badge.  Some Scouts also completed their Sports Enthusiast badge that evening.  James completed his Chief Scouts Gold Award.

On Thursday we went to the Media museum (http://www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk/) then ice skating (http://www.nicetime.org/Rink.htm).  Isabel completed her Chief Scouts Gold Award.

Friday was spent on site.  Whilst some of the leaders were busy packing some kit away the Scouts took part in Archery, Air Rifle Shooting, Go Karting, Service Project, and the Gladiator Arena.  Tea was at Harry Ramsdens and followed by a campfire back at site.  Some Cubs from Wallasey joined us for the campfire - thanks guys for your contributions!

We returned from Gloucester on the Saturday where Scouts were awarded with the many badges they completed througout the week.  All badge requirements for the Scout Section can be found at http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/scout/badges/index.htm

Once again I express my greatest thanks to all who helped with the camp, whether it be by helping with the fundraising and organising the event beforehand, helping with the catering, running activities or driving  - thank you to everyone!

Skip.
